3 x Saunas in Lapland

Interesting Saunas in Lapland

After the freezing minus degrees of Lapland, warm up in one of these unusual saunas..

1. Super-sized smoke sauna

kakslauttanen-sauna

With space for a whopping 150 bathers, Hotel Kakslauttanen boasts one of the largest smoke saunas in Finland. Kakslauttanen is no ordinary hotel as far as things non-sauna go either: Instead of a standard hotel room, you can stay in a log cabin, ice igloo or in an igloo made of glass – perfect for admiring the northern lights. Located right by a lake, there is even the option of ice swimming for the daring bathers.

2. Sauna made of snow

snow sauna

At Arctic Snow Hotel Rovaniemi, the snow doesn’t only surround the sauna – the entire building itself is made of it too. The air of the snow sauna is foggy compared to the dry air of a normal Finnish sauna, as the water melts off the walls in the heat. The bathing session is limited to 15 minutes, after which the walls, melting at 1 cm per 10 minutes, have to refreeze. For the perfect ending to the bath, sit back and relax in the outdoor hot pot under the starry Northern sky.

3. Sauna the Sami way

kotasauna

On the shore of lake Kemijärvi, right by the Suomu fell, there is a sauna built in a traditional Lappish hut. The stove is in the centre of the round kota
hut, while the benches circle the walls of the sauna. The hut fits 10 bathers, with a separate hut serving as lounge area, perfect for kicking back afterwards.
