Natural skin care tips for sauna
Sauna is the most wonderful place to look after your beauty needs. Heat from a sauna opens the skin pores, therefore it is not a good idea to apply lotions or mask onto your skin before entering the sauna.
Skin cleansing in a sauna is a long process, some 20 minutes before the skin warms up sufficiently and pores are opened and another 20 minutes before the cleansing process starts taking place. Increasing the heat gradually will encourage perspiration.
Remember to wash away make up or any dirt off your skin before entering the sauna room.
Home-made sauna cosmetics
The formulation of cosmetics is much simpler than advertising makes us believe. For example honey, peat moss, clay, vegetable oils and herbs are ancient beauty products, which are even today exploited by the modern cosmetics manufactures. The home-made cosmetics are mixed by using specific raw materials, and by experimenting with these you can find the best combinations to suit you. Oat porridge, for example, is a good cleanser, which gently exfoliates even the most sensitive skin. If you add a little runny honey, unflavoured yogurt or some grated apple, you will achieve an effective mask.
Natural skin care
When mixing your ingredients at home, it is a good idea to follow a few simple rules: moisturising elements include, among others, avocado, egg yolk, banana, vegetable oils and honey. For oily skin, on the other hand, choose such ingredients as lemon, strawberry, fresh cucumber and apple as well as honey, which will actively shrink the pores. Sour milk products such as ‘piimä’ (fermented milk) and unflavoured yogurt are gentle cleansers and contain proteins, which strengthen the skin. Dairy cream is especially good for the dry skin; it can also be added into bath water.
Healing herbs
Various herbs and plants can produce strong reactions, so use these with care. Before using these ingredients, first find out about their affects on the skin. For example, nettle will aid blood circulation, chamomile calms, heather and birch ease swelling and spruce and red clover will cleanse and shrink the skin pores. Some flower and plant species can be collected and dried during the summer for those sauna trips in the winter.
