Sauna blogging in the USA
Friends Kati Soini ja Laura Niemi are missing sauna

Two Finnish friends Kati Soini and Laura Niemi are living near New York City in Connecticut. They are the editors of a new blog called Saunaflow.com. They moved to the USA couple of years ago because of their husbands work. Laura has a strong PR and communications background and Kati has worked in various finance and control positions for an international company. For both of them, a sauna is not just a place, it is a state of mind.
Moving abroad made them realize just how much they miss sauna and how important it is for their wellbeing.
– We are blogging about our love for sauna and also about new and inspiring sauna and spa related health, beauty and décor ideas. Our goal is to share our experiences and help our readers create a real sauna and spa spirit even if they don't have a sauna of their own.
1. How enthusiastic are you about the sauna. How would you describe yourself on a scale of mild, warm, hot?
– Kati: I'm warm, because I like mild and relaxing steam and the middle bench is for me.
– Laura: I must be hot, because I'm always ready for sauna. Unfortunately I don't have as many opportunities to visit traditional sauna as I wanted.
2. How often do you go to sauna on average? Do you go alone or do you have a favorite companion?
- Laura: In my previous home in Finland I had a lovely sauna built in an old garage. I used to go to sauna many times a week. Last time I had a wonderful time in Whistler, Canada where I found a big, wooden burned Finnish sauna!
- Kati: I love to visit sauna with my friends. There is no hurry and we chat and use all the time we have. I already wait for next summer and the coming sauna moments.
3. Which products do you usually use (hats, scents, salts etc.) What rituals do you have after the sauna?
– Laura: I love to try different kind of beauty products. I believe in the beauty benefits sauna provides. I am also extremely fond of sauna pillows.
– Kati: I want to keep the good feeling provided by sauna as long as possible. During the summer time I cool myself outside at the sauna patio and in the wintertime I enjoy the post sauna relaxation by a fireplace.
4. What type of sauna user are you?
– Kati: Absolutely I am a relaxer. You need to take your time in a sauna.
– Laura: I agree, a peaceful bath relaxes and eases your stress and pressure.
5. When/how did you catch the sauna bug?
– Laura: I have always loved sauna and it has been an essential part of my life. When I was a child we used to visit sauna with my family every Saturday evening and had some goodies after that. I just learned to love it.
– Kati: I think the love for sauna is inbuilt in the Finns.
6. Please tell us about your favorite sauna:
– Kati: I have two favorite saunas. The first one is my brother's sauna by the Saimaa lake shore. I love its warm and tender steam. The second one is my grandfather's sauna in Northern Finland. There I bath for hours in a peaceful atmosphere without hurry.
– Laura: I love a sauna with a view. I enjoy sitting on the bench and looking at a beautiful scenery. It can be either a lake view or a city view.
7. What is the oddest experience you have had in a sauna?
– Kati: I spent a team day with my co-workers and we visited a big army tent sauna. At the same time my head was burning, but my feet were cold!
– Laura: I was in Istanbul and visited a Turkish sauna. There I had opportunity to get bathed by a local bath lady. She washed me roughly and smoked her cigar at the same time. After her hard treatment I really felt clean! I also had an immemoriable sauna experience at my bridal party in Harjusauna Helsinki.
8. Is there any particular sauna you would like to have the opportunity to visit? If you could choose anyone in the world, who would be your dream sauna guest?
- Kati: Our plan is to visit one of the roof top saunas in Manhattan and admire the lights of the City.
- Laura: And of course we would love to invite the New York actress Sarah Jessica Parker from the TV show called Sex in the City to be our sauna guest. We would serve her champagne and tell her about the secrets of Finnish Sauna benefits.
